Camp Site
Troop 54, Indian Writings camp site, July 19, 1960.

July 19. 1960, by Stanley Meresman
It took the troop a half hour to clean up after breakfast, which lasted from 8:30 to 10:30 AM. (This was longer than it should have taken - Leader's note.) When the campsites were finally cleaned up, the fires put out and the area policed, we put our packs in a single line. The leaders checked the packs and a half dozen had to be re-done before leaving on the hike. One of the other Jamboree troops was having trouble with a lot of boys fainting from the heat.
We were supposed to travel back through Ponil to Pueblano. Before we started, one pack frame broke. The scout had to carry his gear on his back and shoulders in an improvised pack. Richard Rosenzweig, suffering from the muscle he pulled the previous day, reported sick and didn't feel like hiking over the mountain. He was taken to the camp director at Indian Writings and transferred to the camp infirmary at Tent City.
While on the way to a pre-planned lunch spot one more pack frame broke, another scout couldn't carry his pack, another couldn’t breathe, and many scouts were dropping their gear along the way -- tents, mess kits, ponchos, etc.
When we stopped for lunch the leaders were carrying all the gear that was left behind. They weren’t too happy about the situation and they told us so. The trip down the other side of the mountain by another trail seemed faster. In one of the ravines we hiked through, Vince, our guide, stopped the single file behind him, picked up a good sized rock, and walked over and killed a rattler near the trail.
When we got to Ponil, the leaders wisely decided to camp down and not go further. We camped half a mile from Ponil and at 4:30 PM we started setting up our trail tents. When the tents were set up we unpacked and the cooks prepared supper. After supper we sang songs around a camp fire before going to bed.

carrot halwa
My new favorite dessert. The recipe is from the Nov. 2001 Saveur. I can't find it on their site but if you google the name there are lots of versions, all quite similar, on Indian cooking websites. This version uses 1/8th teaspoon of ground cardamom, and both cashews and almonds.
